Properly recovering is very important when it comes to restoring your oral health with oral surgery. In fact, if you don’t take the recovery process seriously after treatment, you could suffer consequences and additional smile-harming problems. So, it’s important to do all you can to recover by following the instructions given to you by your dentist, Dr. Nicole Holmes. To help you, our dental team would like to tell you what NOT to do after surgery.

First, do not participate in any strenuous activities. This means you should not work out, play sports, lift heavily, or even bend over to pick something up off the ground. It’s important to rest for two to three days after the treatment in order to heal properly.

Second, don’t consume hot, hard, and crunchy foods. Hot foods are dangerous because when your mouth is numb, you can’t tell how warm the food is, which can increase your chances of burning your mouth. Hard and crunchy foods are dangerous because they can slip and injure the surgical wound when you’re chewing them.

Third, don’t clean the treated section of the mouth until your dentist says so. This means you should not brush, rinse, and floss until the necessary time.

Fourth, don’t use tobacco or drink alcohol. Smoking and drinking can delay the recovery process and even cause complications that can make healing more difficult. It’s best to avoid smoking and drinking for at least one full day after treatment.
